FROM MISS MONEYPENNY TO HUMAN SECRETARY
Remember Miss Moneypenny? Well, even if not, Miss Moneypenny has evolved! Today secretarial services are increasingly all about using online solutions – from virtual secretaries to online transcription services like ours.
For those of the Meghan Trainor generation (did you know that she was born as recently as 1993??) who might be wondering – who is this Miss Moneypenny? who has a surname like M-O-N-E-Y-P-E-N-N-Y? and why has she evolved? Let me put it to you like this. Miss Moneypenny is the kind of person who put the capital ‘S’ in the ‘Secretarial’ of Secretarial Services. In fact, she is the kind of person who put the capital ‘S’ in Secretarial Services too.
Trusted by 007 himself, Miss Moneypenny is the epitome of the trustworthy, steadfast and efficient individual of her profession offering secretarial services to the head of the British Service in James Bond movies. Mostly seated behind her trusty typewriter or on the phone, the tools of the trade, skills required and even the management of time for secretarial services that she represented has changed over the decades mostly thanks to technological advancements.
Looking back over history, Wikipedia explains that the traditional title of secretary goes as far back as the Renaissance when men involved in the daily correspondence and activities of the powerful assumed this role. Thanks to the invention of the typewriter in the 1880s, typing became an essential skill for this profession. With time, the term has applied to more and varied secretarial services. An increasing responsibility of many secretaries also became transcription of the office meetings and any other business recordings.
SECRETARIAL SERVICES TODAY?
In our day and age, secretaries are no longer simply just typists handling correspondence, responsible for filing and involved with general clerical work. Today, secretaries are multi-taskers with degrees or diplomas using entry-level positions as stepping stones. Often, secretaries are involved with managing projects and other staff and some benefit by specialising in one industry or area, such as a legal or medical secretarial work. On a different level, the role of personal assistant to a director or other senior manager is seen as a gatekeeper type of role, with high salaries being earned. Many of our transcribers have strong secretarial services backgrounds and experience – it takes a lot more patience and experience than you may think.
A “SECRETARY” THAT TRANSCRIBES FOR YOU?
On another front, the introduction of computers and the Internet have also made it possible for many people to offer secretarial services from the convenience of their homes. Some companies have become keen to outsource their secretarial needs including transcription, copy typing and data entry to individuals working from home or online secretarial services, which has presented opportunities for entrepreneurs and stay-at-home individuals. This type of offering especially benefits companies that do not see the need or can’t afford the staff to complete these tasks.
While the automation of secretarial services is a concern for the future of those of this profession, some argue that there will always be a demand for secretarial services provided by a human being with a gate-keeper role. Those, like the Moneypenny-type 🙂
